The Spanish Armada was a naval fleet assembled by King Philip II of Spain in 1588 in order to invade England and depose Queen Elizabeth I. The Armada consisted of over 130 ships, including smaller vessels used for transport and larger galleons used for fighting.
The Armada was ultimately defeated by the English navy in the English Channel due to a combination of favorable weather conditions, strategic planning by the English, and limited resources of the Spanish fleet. Approximately 50 Spanish ships were destroyed or captured, and many more were forced to retreat or wrecked on the shores of Ireland.
The defeat of the Spanish Armada was a significant event in English history, leading to a period of increased naval and military power, as well as a sense of national pride.
